A Map of the New World (2024), Stanley Donwood

Idem Studio Paris, February 2024, filmed by Garth Jennings and Guy-Laurent Homsy
Early morning, February 2024: Filmmaker Garth Jennings and cinematographer Guy-Laurent Homsy joined artist Stanley Donwood, master print maker Patrice Forest and his team, as well as Donwood's dealer, James Elwes, to record the first press of the artist's monumental new lithograph, A Map of The New World (2024). After months of painstaking linocutting at Idem's Atelier, the first print of 44 editions was produced by 10 people on Idem's giant press 'Moby Dick' (a nickname given to it by the filmaker and artist David Lynch), which was built 1889. The work draws from ancient cartography and Donwood's recent body of paintings made with Thom Yorke and exhibited in London last year, 'The Crow Flies'.

This short documentary offers an intimate glimpse into Donwood's process and the inner workings of Idem, which, for over a century, has hosted artistic legends like Matisse, Picasso and Chagall.

A Map of the New World (2024) is printed and published by Idem Paris.
