'Johnson explores the ordinary moments of contemporary life as utopia, a paradise found in the recesses of the artist’s mind, a wild place of reverie. Images emerge from words, studies of people, photographs or still-life objects which may become animate in the process or rendered newly decorative and still.' - Rosa J. H. Berland

Lee Johnson was born in Wiltshire and has lived and worked in London since 2000. He received his MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 2001, and his works are held in the collections of Soho House, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, and University of the Arts London; as well as numerous private collections, including those of renowned musicians, singers, actors and artists, worldwide.

Johnson was selected for the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in 2010 and he has exhibited widely, most notably in public institutions in the UK including Hastings Contemporary, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery, the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, and Torre Abbey, Devon. Johnson has also exhibited in many private galleries and artist-run spaces in the UK and overseas, including Terrace Gallery, London; Lab Gallery, New York; Nicholas Thompson Gallery, Melbourne, Australia; Carslberg Byens Galleri & Kunstsalon, Copenhagen, Denmark; ArTower Agora, Athens, Greece; and Gozo Contemporary, Malta.  Johnson was the winner of the inaugural Lido Stores Open, Margate, in 2021.
